A reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah
Five hundred years before Jesus’ birth, the prophet we know as Isaiah described a man who suffers for the sake of his people. Christians use Isaiah’s powerful words as a reflection upon the suffering of Jesus.
Surely he has borne our infirmities
and carried our diseases;
yet we accounted him stricken,
struck down by God, and afflicted.
But he was wounded for our transgressions,
crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the punishment that made us whole,
and by his bruises we are healed.
All we like sheep have gone astray;
we have all turned to our own way,
and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
(Isaiah 53:4-6)
A Prayer for Strength
O God, you know us to be set in the midst’s of so many and great dangers, that by reason of the frailty of our nature we cannot always stand upright: Grant us such strength and protection as may support us in all dangers, and carry us through all trials; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Song: Precious Lord, Take My Hand - Verse 1
Precious Lord, take my hand,
Lead me on, let me stand;
I am tired, I am weak, I am worn.
Through the storm, through the night, lead me on to the light;
Take my hand, precious Lord, lead me on.
- Thomas Dorsey
Holy God,
Holy and mighty,
Holy immortal one,
have mercy upon us.
